Need for Jesse Young

Now is the opportunity for citizens in the 6th Congressional District to get a representative for the 21st century. With the departure of Norm Dicks, in Jesse Young, we have an outstanding candidate with unique qualifications that anyone should be grateful to have in Congress. Jesse Young is a computer information technology expert, as well as a business expert. Focusing my comments on the IT issue, one of America’s biggest threats is the security of our information systems. In the last couple years, individual and state sponsored hackers have proven themselves capable of infiltrating our government, military, industrial controls, our financial records, and our personal history. If you’ve not yet been hit, consider yourself lucky. Even our modern cars and computer controlled medical devices are vulnerable. Our current Congress is woefully undereducated in how to deal with the threats. Jesse, when elected, would be among the first consulted on security matters and would rise to the top quickly in decision making. What happens when Congress has politicians who don’t understand a particularly difficult issue? Over-reaction, major policy mistakes, a reduction of privacy and liberty. Naïve politicians let the lobbyists write the bills and explain their position to them. Jesse can actually help ensure over-reaction doesn’t occur because he understands the issues.

For those of us who write about information technology, my wife as a journalist for a data center magazine, and I as a fiction novelist, America’s computer security future is fraught with peril. Our government can’t keep up, and the next war WILL be fought in cyberspace. Volunteers Honored at Annual Dinner

The Grays Harbor Republican Party honored six outstanding volunteers at its Lincoln Day Dinner on February 18 at the Aberdeen Museum. "Volunteers are the backbone of the party," said Kristine Lowder, Grays Harbor Republican Party Chair. "We're honoring those who are the cream of the volunteer crop." Awards were presented in two categories: Eagle Volunteers and PCO (Precinct Committee Officer) of the Year.

A nationally recognized program launched by Washington State Republican Party National Committeeman Jeff Kent and National Committeewoman Fredi Simpson, the Eagle Volunteer Program recognizes the "hardest working, most effective volunteers" in each county. Criteria for selection include those who: 1) Volunteer over and over again for whatever the Party needs; 2) Can be counted upon to accomplish the task assigned to them; 3) Are positive representatives and strong advocates for the Republican Party; and 4) Inspire others to participate in Party activities. Grays Harbor Republican Party Eagle Volunteer honorees are: Christine Yeager, Jonathan Gerber, Dennis Brumbaugh, Ken Estes and Mark Paulsen.

Citing exceptional performance as a PCO and "going above and beyond the call of duty over and over again not just once or twice, but over the course of an entire year," Lowder presented the 2011 PCO of the Year Award to Terry Moore. A resident of Copalis Beach, Moore chairs the Party's Candidates and Issues Committee and is the Grays Harbor Chair for Jesse Young for Congress. PCO of the Year was determined by a vote among party PCOs.

Dicks Retires, Young Responds

After serving 18 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Norm Dicks is calling it quits. Dicks announced his plans to retire on March 2. Jesse Young is running for Dicks's seat in the 6th District, and was endorsed by the Grays Harbor Republican Party by unanimous vote at its October 4 Central Committee Meeting.

"The party's October endorsement of Jesse Young showed our confidence in Jesse, his campaign, and his ability to effect positive change for Grays Harbor," said Kristine Lowder, Grays Harbor Republican Party Chair. "Harborites can look forward to having a young, dynamic business professional who thinks 'outside the box' and knows how to get things done representing them in Congress."

Said Young, "I want to thank Congressman Dicks for his many years of public service. As he begins to chart a new course in life, I also extend my best wishes for health and prosperity in his future endeavors. Enjoy your family Congressman Dicks, and thank you again for your service." He added, "As for the future of the 6th district, I look forward to sharing our plans for effective job growth and fiscal responsibility within the district and in our nation’s capital. The son of a hard-working single mom whose family was once homeless, Young grew up in the Hilltop neighborhood of Tacoma. He is a high school class valedictorian and worked as a dishwasher to help pay for his college education at Notre Dame, where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems in 1999. Since then, Young has traveled around the United States consulting with major corporations in the aerospace, healthcare, energy, insurance, and real estate industries. In 2007, Jesse accepted the position of Senior Business Technology Consultant with Russell Investments, then headquartered in Tacoma, where he consulted in the departments of Global Human Resources, Global Finance and the Office of the CEO.

Jesse, his wife Jennie and their five children reside in Gig Harbor, Washington where they are active members in their church and community.

"Get the Gavel" in 2012!

Republicans are fired up and ready to ramp it up in 2012!

"Elect 12 in '12!" and "Get the Gavel" were frequent refrains sounded throughout the Republican House and Senate Caucus Room on February 21 during "State Committee Goes to Olympia Day."

Kicked off by WSRP Chairman Kirby Wilbur, the three-hour event featured a "Who's Who" line-up of state representatives including Richard DeBolt, Barbara Bailey (pictured), Norma Smith, Bill Hinkle and Michael Baumgartner, who keynoted at this year's GHRP Lincoln Day Dinner. Baumgartner gave a "shout out" to Grays Harbor Republicans for "a great dinner with a great group of Republicans." Baumgartner is challenging Maria Cantwell for U.S. Senate.

Republican representatives spoke time and time again about the "sad" state of the recently released Democrat budget, which cuts "a little bit from everything" versus the Republican budget plan, which prioritizes spending on education, public safety and the most vulnerable. "The Republican budget incorporates principle and priorities" said Rep. Wilcox, "versus the Democrat budget that's full of gimmicks."

Another legislator said, "Liberty is under assault, whether it's religious liberty or economic liberty. We're in an existential battle for the future of Washington State. We need your help and support every day."

How 'bout we start with "getting the gavel" and making Republicans the majority party in Olympia this November?

Harborites had plenty of opportunities to meet Jesse Young and hear about his vision for the 6th District recently, with volunteer recruitment meetings in both Montesano and Hoquiam in February. Jesse Young is challenging multi-decade incumbent Norm Dicks in the 6th District. The February 23 meeting at the Hoquiam Library drew a capacity crowd and required additional seating.

Attendees at both meetings were given plenty to think about and act upon as Young opened the evening by asking rhetorically, "Why aren't we talking about the uniqueness of this district? It is set apart and unique among any district in the nation. It can be pre-eminent in job growth, and it doesn't take a top-down government program to do it."

Young also spoke about the Pacific Rim trade economy and its relationship to the Port of Grays Harbor, how Dodd-Frank is strangling small business and why it needs to be repealed, why private business, not government, creates jobs, and natural resources unique to the Olympic Peninsula such as oil, natural gas and rare earth metals. "Our vision includes bringing union jobs back to the Harbor," he said.

On the subject of Wild Olympics, which Young firmly opposes, he asked, "How many of you are tired of the other side framing the argument to put you on the defense? I intend to change that argument, and put forth a plan showing how we can honor our land and create jobs at the same time."

Young explained his three-phase plan for winning the 6th District, which includes intensive voter research down to the precinct level. Borrowing from the business world, Young outlined his plan using the acronym NAME: Non-negotiable integrity; Accountability; Measurability and Effectiveness.

Opening the floor for questions and answers, Young said, "I want to let you drive the meeting. Ask any questions you want in order to get over the hurdle of not believing we can get it done." As an example, he noted that "this campaign has raised more money against Norm Dicks than any other campaign."

Attendees received copies of Young's statement on Wild Olympics, Jesse Young for Congress stickers, palm cards, a three-page paper on where he stands on various issues, and a bio sheet, About Jesse. Volunteer opportunities in six categories were also provided, along with response cards.

"It's not good enough to just be right on the issues" Young emphasized. "You have to be right and effective on the issues." He concluded, "If you're ready to lock arms with this campaign, your time won't be wasted."

Washington's Caucuses Matter

There is no presidential primary this year. The state legislature replaced the traditional primary with the caucus system as a cost-cutting measure.

On Saturday, March 3, the Washington State Republican Party will hold caucuses statewide beginning at 10:00 a.m. Writes political strategist Anthony Welcher:

"This will be the first caucus in our state in decades that will not compete for attention with a primary. As a result, it's imperative for us to turnout our friends and family that may normally pass on spending several hours of their time on a given Saturday participating in the oldest and one of the most engaging forms of democracy in our nation. It's clear the presidential campaigns see Washington's value in the race for the nomination because by this weekend all 4 of the top contenders will have visited the state in the last 3 weeks. It's a unique year for Washington, especially since our caucuses fall only 3 days before Super Tuesday!"

Norm Dicks Does It Again

Last week your (he does not represent me) Congressman Norm Dicks voted “NO” on H.R. 3408. This is the bill that would have expanded oil and gas drilling thereby nearly tripling America’s offshore energy production by 2027, build the Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline, open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling and start oil-shale extraction on federal land in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah.

This bill would have helped us on the way to relying less on Mid-East oil, provided thousands of jobs for Americans, and provided additional revenue to the federal government directly by the sale of these resources. AND, it needs no investment (i.e. spending) by Government. All the Government had to do was to get out of the way and say go ahead. Congressman Norm Dicks voted against this bill!!!

With gasoline prices at the highest point ever at this time of year, and some predicting they will reach $4.25 per gallon or more by this summer, wouldn’t it make sense to do something to increase the supply, especially when it is an American and/or Canadian supply? Obviously not, at least according to Congressman Dicks.

Not only does Congressman Dicks want to turn our Olympic Mountains area into a wilderness park (Wild Olympics Proposal) taking away timber related jobs from Grays Harbor County and the rest of the Olympic Peninsula, he wants to drive up gas prices, reduce our access to oil and take jobs away from Americans across the country. These actions cannot be tolerated!!!

There is something we can do. There is an election coming up in November. We can elect Jesse Young to replace Congressman Dicks. Jesse Young, who is a businessman and not a career politician, opposes the Wild Olympics Proposal, is in favor of additional oil production, and the Keystone Pipeline. In other words, he wants lower gas prices, less dependence on Mid-East oil and more jobs for Americans both in Grays Harbor County and across the Country.

Lincoln Day Dinner 2012: "This Is Our Time"

The Grays Harbor Republican Party's 2012 Lincoln Day Dinner drew enthusiastic responses from a capacity crowd at the Aberdeen Museum on February 18. Playing off a pivotal scene from the movie Miracle in which Kurt Russell plays 1980 U.S. Men's Hockey Coach Herb Brooks, the evening's theme was This Is Our Time.

Special guests included Kim Wyman, candidate for Washington Secretary of State, State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Michael Baumgartner, Rick Winsman, candidate for State Sentate in the 19th District, Jesse Young, candidate for Congress in the 6th District, and Fredi Simpson, WSRP National Committeewoman. County Commissioner Herb Welch was also featured.

Thurston County Auditor Kim Wyman emphasized her credentials as a solid Republican, noting that she is "the only elected Republican elected in Thurston County, so I feel your pain." Wyman attributed her success to running her office in a non-partisan manner.

State Senator Michael Baumgarter of Spokane keynoted, contrasting his vast experience in business, economics and foreign policy with incumbent's Maria Cantwell dearth of the same and her weak record. A room full of people on their feet resulted when Baumgartner asked those to stand who were willing to get involved in at least one campaign.

Elma resident and Republican PCO Wes Cormier announced his plans to challenge incumbent Terry Willis for County Commissioner. A longtime resident of Grays Harbor, Cormier, 33, is a senior residential assessor in the Assessor's Office. He is also the county coordinator for the Ron Paul campaign.

Five Eagle Volunteer Awardees were also recognized at the dinner: Christine Yeager, Mark Paulsen, Dennis Brumbaugh, Jonathan Gerber and Ken Estes. Honoring "the very best Republican Party volunteers," the Eagle Volunteer Recognition Program was launched by WSRP National Committeeeman Jeff Kent and National Committeewoman Fredi Simpson and is backed by RNC Chair Reince Preibus.

Outstanding service for a PCO who has gone "above and beyond the call of duty over and over again" went to Terry Moore, who was voted PCO of the Year by his fellow PCOs. A resident of Copalis Beach, Moore chairs the GHRP Candidates and Issues Committee and the Grays Harbor for Jesse Young Campaign.

The evening included a rendition of The Battle Hymn of the Republic by Maggie Vincent and a performance by the Lighthouse Ballet Academy.

Rick Winsman was the featured speaker at the GHRP's February 7 Central Committee Meeting. He is running for State Senate against Brian Hatfield in the 19th District.

Noting the need to make government "lean, mean, and clean," Winsman spoke about identifying and eliminating redundancies within government and cited examples from the Department of Ecology. He also stressed the need for returning education to local control, his background, family, and growing up in New York and Iowa.

Romney Wins at Roanoke

Mitt Romney was the runaway winner in a presidential straw poll taken on January 29 at the Roanoke Conference in Ocean Shores. Newt Gingrich came in a distant second, trailed by Ron Paul and Rick Santorum. Marrco Rubio led from a list of twenty-three potential nominees in the vice presidential straw poll. More than 400 Republican and conservative leaders and activists attended this year's conference which featured breakout sessions on technology, utilizing grassroots, and redistricting. Discussions on a wide variety of current topics and events were included during the three-day event.

Grays Harbor Republicans Pass Resolution on Wild Olympics

The Grays Harbor Republican Party passed the following resolution at its February 7 Central Committee Meeting:

"Resolved, that the Central Committee of the Grays Harbor County Republican Party hereby opposes the draft proposals to establish new Wilderness, Wild and Scenic River and willing seller National Preserves on the Olympic Peninsula as put forth by Congressman Norm Dicks and Senator Patty Murray on November 15, 2011."

The resolution was presented by Terry Moore, who chairs the Grays Harbor for Jesse Young Campaign. A staunch opponent of Wild Olympics, Young is challenging Norm Dicks in the Sixth District.

The party unanimously endorsed the efforts of Working Wild Olympics, a coalition of private property proponents, timber interests and outdoor enthusiasts, at its April 5, 2011 Central Committee Meeting.

Featured speakers are U.S. Senate candidate Michael Baumgartner of Spokane and Washington Secretary of State candidate Kim Wyman of Thurston County. Political consultant, entrepreneur, Washington Times editorialist and former Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for the U.S. Department of State Anthony Welcher will emcee.

Doors open for a social hour and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served starting at 6:30 p.m. The evening will also include a musical selection by local violinist Maggie Vincent and awards.

Who May Participate in Precinct Caucuses?

According to Rule 10 of the 2012 Rules for Precinct Caucuses concerning Who May Participate in the Precinct Caucus:

"Any registered voter of the precinct in which the caucus is being conducted who is willing to state by signing a Registration form and List of Participants at Precinct Caucus form that he/she considers him/herself to be a Republican and has not participated and will not participate in the 2012 caucus or convention system of any other party shall be eligible to participate in the caucus."

Republicans Applaud Democrat Legislators

As reported in the January 6 issue of The Daily World, Democrat lawmakers from the 19th and 24th districts voiced unanimous opposition to the Wild Olympics Campaign at the delegation's annual legislative send-off on January 5. The campaign is supported by Sen. Patty Murray and Rep. Norm Dicks.

The Grays Harbor Republican Party opposed the campaign as early as last spring. Citing concerns related to private property rights and intrusive, expansive government, the GHRP Central Committee voted unanimously to endorse the efforts of Working Wild Olympics, a coalition of timber interests and outdoor enthusiasts that has led the fight against the campaign's "government land grab."

We applaud Dean Takko, Kevin Van de Wege, Steve Tharinger, Brian Hatfield, Jim Hargrove and Brian Blake for joining Grays Harbor Republicans in our opposition to Wild Olympics. We also commend Commissioner Herb Welch for his stand against the campaign even though Commissioners Willis and Wilson continue to waffle.

While Grays Harbor Republicans have been lauded for showing "backbone" on this issue, Grays Harbor Democrats haven't yet found their spines. The Daily World also reported that "Blake led some Democrats - including Takko and Hatfield - to a meeting of the Grays Harbor Democrats in hopes of getting the Democrats to approve a resolution opposing the Wild Olympics proposal." Instead, Grays Harbor Democrats opted to "table" the issue because it "was not on the agenda."

NO Presidential Primary in 2012: 'Get Thee To a Caucus!'

If you plan to camp out at your mail box and await the arrival of a presidential primary ballot for 2012, you'll have a long wait. There won't be one. That's because the Washington state legislature has approved a bill to suspend the 2012 presidential primary, "to save much-needed revenue."

Rather than a traditional presidential primary, Washington will have a caucus system next year. Your voice will be crucial. If you want to have a say in who the 2012 GOP presidential nominee will be, attend your local caucus on March 3.

Murray, Dicks Deaf on "Wild Olympics"?

A Wild Olympics "community workshop" coordinated by staff from Rep. Norm Dicks' and Sen. Patty Murray's offices drew a large crowd and considerable consternation in Hoquiam on December 4.

Twenty minutes after the "community workshop" was scheduled to open, an unidentified staffer "welcomed" attendees and thanked the large crowd for coming. He explained that six staff members each for Dicks and Murray were on site to "listen to what you have to say."

The staffer's "clarification" that the event wasn't really a "public forum," bur rather a write-down-your-comment and drop-it-in-the-box format drew angry responses

"I came here for open public testimony" said one man. "We want to speak our piece." The staffer responded, "Come talk to us," which was clearly not what most people had in mind for a "public forum."

A dozen or so "Water - Forests - Fish: Our Future - Wild Olympics" signs sprouted around the Central Elementary School gymnasium, but majority sentiment seemed squarely in the other camp. Several "Public Notice: Wild Olympics Kills Jobs" signs were on hand. Hand-lettered signage included:

"Enough government programs! We need jobs!"

"Wild Olympics? How about Wild Washington?

Let's make the whole state a park. Hello."

"Wild Olympics means higher unemployment."

Perhaps revealing more than she intended, one Wild Olympics proponent was heard to say, "All they care about are jobs. Logging jobs are all going overseas. I'd rather save our forests."

The controversy surrounding the Wild Olympics Campaign isn't likely to die down soon. Grays Harbor Republicans are on record as opposing the campaign.

Wild Olympics Forum - Why??

The Wild Olympics Forum sponsored by Senator Patty Murray and Congressman Norm Dicks held at Central Elementary School in Hoquiam on December 4 was confrontational and cantankerous at best. It was obvious that the structure of the presentation was not what was expected nor desired by a large number of the attendees. The result was chaos. This would be treated as a learning experience for the class president of any 8th grade class in the County; for a sitting U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative to be instrumental is unbelievable.

Without detailing all the pros and cons of the specific proposal, one cannot help but wonder why this proposal is being made at this time. With the country in a recession and Grays Harbor County having the highest unemployment rate in the state, it would certainly appear that there are more pressing matters that our elected officials should be addressing. In fact, Sen. Murray was actually the Chair of the so-called “Super Committee” which was charged by the Congress and President Obama to cut $1.5 trillion over a ten year period from the federal budget. With the current spending level of $3.5 trillion/year, this amounts to a reduction of 4%. How many Harborites have cut much more than that from their spending? She was unable to get any kind of agreement, in essence throwing her hands in the air, and then proposes expanding the Federal Government through the Wild Olympics Plans.

As for Rep. Dicks, he simply has not been heard from for some time until now. It originally appeared that he was a driving force behind the Wild Olympics proposal but it now appears that he has assumed a secondary role to Sen. Murray. Could that be because has to make a reelection run whereas Sen. Murray does not?

In an August 23, 2011 letter published in the Daily World, former Commissioner Al Carter, a paid spokesman, stated that some 1300 Harborites have signed a petition supporting the Wild Olympics. According to the 2010 census, there are 72,797 residents of Grays Harbor County. This means that the 1300 individuals referenced by Mr. Carter represent 1.79% of the County. In other words, while there may be 1300 supporters, there are well over 71,000 who are either opposed or have no opinion. Perhaps the 98.21% should “Occupy” the forest?

The Federal and State government currently own approximately 15,513,500 acres of land in the State of Washington. This does not include land used for office buildings, prisons, counties, cities, and other minor uses. This represents 36.41% of the total area of the State. Does the government really need to expand its holdings?

Why are Sen. Murray and Rep. Dicks raising such a divisive issue at this time? Wouldn’t their time be much better spent working to resolve the national debt issue and local unemployment? Are they trying to distract people from the current economic situation? How about something to bring people together in these difficult times?

Dicks, Murray Biggest Losers in Wild Olympics 'Workshop'

Thank you to Rep. Norm Dicks and Sen. Patty Murray for coordinating "community workshops" throughout the Peninsula to promote proposals related to Wild Olympics. The December 4 "workshop" in Hoquiam was as coherent as a cheese blintz. I've seen better organized riots. The write-your-comment-on-a-card and drop-it-in-the-box format wasn't what most attendees had in mind for a "workshop," and some said so. Vociferously.

Not surprisingly, Dicks and Murray were no-shows, as was the case in Port Townsend, Shelton and Port Angeles. So thank you, Norm, Patty, and company, for showing Harborites just how out of touch and out to lunch you really are!

Military Appreciation Night A Hit!

"This was great!" "Thank you for doing this!" and "We really enjoyed it! Are you going to do this again?" were a few of the comments from a large crowd of veterans and guests at the party's November 11 Military Appreciation Night. The capacity crowd at the Pearsall Building in Aberdeen enjoyed a chili feed with all the trimmings as well as entertainment by the Grays Harbor Banjo Band, a cake-cutting ceremony honoring the November 10 birthday of the United States Marine Corps, and keynote speaker Jesse Young, candidate for Congress, Sixth District.

County Chair Kristine Lowder welcomed friends and guests, thanking veterans and active duty military for "what you have done, are doing and what you continue to do for us and for our country." Rev. Dan Kennedy of Faith Tabernacle Church in Central Park opened with the Invocation, followed by a presentation of the colors by the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps from Olympia, the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star Spangled Banner. The Grays Harbor Banjo Band played a varied repertoire of vintage and patriotic music that was well-received.

Prefacing his comments with, "this is not a stump speech," Jesse Young noted the collective wisdom and experience evident in the room and the value of military service in mentoring the next generation.

Chris Lowder, USMCR and GHRP Vice-Chair, presided as senior officer over a cake-cutting ceremony honoring the United States Marine Corps' birthday. In keeping with tradition, the youngest marine present, Tom Davis, age 62, and his father, age 84, assisted in cutting the cake with Lowder's officer sword. The band played Happy Birthday as the crowd sang along. Naval Sea Cadets helped served cake to appreciative guests. The Banjo Band closed out the program with God Bless America.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic.

Gubernatorial Candidate Shahram Hadian at CCM

Outlining his vision, values and platform, gubernatorial candidate Shahram Hadian of Everett spoke at the Grays Harbor Republican Central Committee Meeting on November 1 and took questions from attendees about a variety of issues and concerns. A Christian pastor and former Muslim, Hadian said his background includes experience as a pastor, police officer, teacher, coach and small business owner. He was a candidate for state representative in 2010.

Issues Mr. Hadian addressed included the state budget and wasteful spending, education, illegal immigration, the economy, national security, unions, the importance of the family as the bedrock of society, upholding the law, respecting the will of the people, and limited government. Following his presentation, Mr. Hadian engaged members on a broad range of subjects for nearly an hour.

Hadian said, "I am grateful for the opportunity to come to Grays Harbor and share about our campaign and the need for courageous leadership in Olympia. It was great to meet everyone and I look forward to coming back!"

"Military Appreciation Night" November 11

This "thank you for your service" event features a buffet-style chili feed, door prizes, and entertainment by the Banjo Band. Birthday cake will also be served to commemorate the 236th birthday of the United States Marine Corps, which occurs on November 10. Grays Harbor for Rob McKenna Update

The Grays Harbor for Rob McKenna Steering Committee on October 18 at the Golden Dragon restaurant in Hoquiam. Jill Fagan, political director for the McKenna team, provided a campaign update and noted that "thousands of brand new donors" are on board. She also outlined a plan for building a schedule of events and putting together grassroots organizations for each county. Attendees were asked for input regarding local issues and events.

Among the many items discussed relating to the Grays Harbor political scene were: Wild Olympics, jobs and the economy, healthcare, illegal immigration and education.

The committee is actively recruiting for specific roles and assignments, including on-line/rapid response teams, social media, volunteer recruitment and committee expansion. The next committee meeting will take place in January 2012.

WSRP Fall Dinner

Had the opportunity to attend the Washington State Republican Party Fall Dinner on October 18th with Jesse Young, candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 6th District. It was extremely well attended, and in fact, Kirby Wilbur (State Chairman) apologized for overselling the event and further added that he would probably be looking for a larger venue in the future. There were over 400 attendees. The enthusiasm and energy in the room was great. This bodes well for Republican candidates throughout the State.

Karl Rove was the featured speaker and was FANTASTIC. While we were eating our dinner, Mr. Rove "roved" the room. He introduced himself, chatted with everyone, and was tremendously personable and good natured. There were picture opportunities like the one above featuring Jesse and Jennie Young with Mr. Rove.

Mr. Rove then spoke about the upcoming Presidential election and his vision of how President Obama can be defeated in 2012. This was not a speech but rather a talk that sometimes rambled off into stories and anecdotes but always returned to the point. It also contained the typical Rove statistics and detailed analysis. It was extremely informational, interesting, and enjoyable. If you ever have an opportunity to attend an event featuring Mr. Rove I suggest you seize the chance.

Election strategy is Mr. Rove's forte and, according to Mr. Rove, the strategy for defeating President Obama is to measure him by the standards that he, himself, set. Whether it is the closing of Guantanamo Bay, or that Unemployment will not exceed 8%, or any of the other myriad of promises/statements that he has made and not delivered. This strategy is applicable regardless of the Republican nominee and Mr. Rove declined to name his preferred candidate.

All in all, a very enlightening evening.

MacEwen Kick-Off Draws Full House

The Drew MacEwen campaign kick-off drew a full house in Shelton on September 30. It was standing room ony as MacEwen introduced himself, outlined his background and reasons for running for the State House of Representatatives in the 35th Legislative District, Position 2.

MacEwen spoke for about twenty minutes at the kick-off event, pinpointing problems and potential solutions within the state. Among the many topics discussed were state budget priorities, identifying and reducing/eliminating wasteful government spending, transportation, commerce, healthcare, reducing taxes and the need for more competition and local control in education. "Government can provide tools to promote a business-friendly climate" he said, "but government doesn't create jobs; business does."

A Navy veteran, MacEwen is the founder and president of Falcon Financial Inc., an investment firm in Union, and Vice President of the Shelton Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the Boards of the Shelton Rotary and the Alderbrook Golf and Yacht Club. He's a candidate for State House Representative, Position 2 in the 35th Legislative District, a seat held by Fred Finn, who will not seek re-election. Pollster: Inslee Barely Ahead in King County; McKenna Surging

The latest poll numbers showing Republican Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna beating US Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA,1) 46-39 in the 2012 governor’s race contain some more grim news for Inslee: He’s barely ahead in King County, traditionally a Democratic stronghold.

PubliCola reports that the Democrat is "supposed to win King County" and Inslee does in the latest poll: 45-39." But that's hardly something for Democrats to crow about. In 2010, Patty Murray (D-WA) beat Republican challenger Dino Rossi in King County in 2010 64.59 to 34.91.

Says Kevin Ingham, vice president for polling and research at Strategies 360, told PubliCola:

"The size of Inslee’s lead in King County should be a concern for Democrats. In 2004, Chris Gregoire beat Dino Rossi 58 percent to 40 percent in King County. At this point, McKenna has as much support as Rossi did, while Inslee has far less than Gregoire wound up with."

Republicans need to be in the mid-40s in King County on election day to have any chance of winning, says PublicCola. Right now McKenna has a 40 percent favorability rating in King —which is higher than he scores in any other part of the state. Inslee’s favorable rating in King County is 42 percent.

Santorum Up - Perry Down

Last night's GOP Presidential debate featured one significant gain, one significant loss, one recovery, one new person, and slight gains or no change for everyone else.

THE GAIN

Former Senator Rick Santorum increased his standing with his overall answers but especially his give and take with Governor Rick Perry about Perry's support for allowing illegal immigrants to pay in state tuition at Texas universities and colleges. Sen. Santorum's position, that giving a benefit to illegal immigrants that is not available to legal citizens was well taken and stated in a forceful manner.

THE LOSS

Gov. Rick Perry lost ground on several issues. The aforementioned tuition for illegal immigrants was one. He also rambled through an attempt to call former Governor Mitt Romney a flip-flopper but either forgot, got confused, or lost interest during the course of his statement.

Perhaps the largest gaffe was not revealed until later. When asked about his support for the mandatory HPV vaccination program and questioned about his being lobbied by former associates, he made the statement that he had been lobbied by a 31 year old woman with cervical cancer and this was part of the reason for his decision. Fact checkers later discovered that he had not met the woman he referenced until AFTER he instituted the program. This type of untruth is very disconcerting.

THE RECOVERY

After absolutely whiffing on the question about what percentage of the money someone makes should go to the government, Representative Michelle Bachman recovered with her statement about not having to choose a moderate to run against President Obama. Rep. Bachman started by saying how she wanted to answer the question about taxes then went on for the entire answer period without saying anything. This was disappointing. Her comment late in the debate that, against Pres. Obama, Republicans do not have to settle for a "moderate" candidate was good to hear in contrast to all the media folks' talk about candidates being "too conservative" or "too radical" to win.

THE NEW PERSON

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson made his first debate appearance. He did have the best line of the debate with his comment that his neighbor's two dogs had made more shovel ready projects than Pres. Obama. However, it was pointed out later that this was actually a quote from Rush Limbaugh. Otherwise, he was not really involved.

THE REST

Former Governor Mitt Romney was cool and collected. He managed to withstand questions about RomneyCare and joined Sen. Santorum in the attack on Gov. Perry's tuition position by pointing out that the difference in cost between in-state and out-of-state tuition was almost $100,000.

Businessman Herman Cain shared his personal story about being a cancer survivor and pointed out that, he believes, he would not have survived if ObamaCare had been in place. He contended that having access to immediate treatment rather than having to go through a bureaucratic process was what allowed him to now be cancer free.

Representative Ron Paul was his usual feisty self. He always seems to be able to make two or three great points then throws out a clinker. All at the same time.

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich was also his usual self. It appears that he is not really interested in actually being elected but wants the personal exposure and the exposure of some his ideas.

Former Governor John Huntsman comported himself well but there was really nothing to distinguish him from the others.

Candidates Show Weaknesses - Bachman the Winner

At the Republican Presidential Debate held on September 12, Michelle Bachman advanced her cause. She answered questions well, made her points, and kept a calm yet serious demeanor. She did enter into the sniping once but later made up for it when she told the moderator to ask the other candidate when pressed about his position on an issue.

Several candidates showed some weakness. This was especially true of the front runners, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. After starting with a carryover of the sniping from the previous debate, they managed to get by this and onto the issues. This is where the weakness started to appear.

Romney once again defended RomneyCare in Massachusetts. His argument is that it is a states' rights issue and therefore acceptable if done at the state level. This is different than ObamaCare, which he is against, which is a federal program. So.....it is OK for the state to mandate that I spend my money in a certain way but not the federal government. This is a distinction without a difference. There should be no way that any governmental agency can force me to buy something just for the privilege of living. This concept is continuing to be troubling.

Rick Perry trotted out the same state rights' excuse when addressing the issue of Texas allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition. Whether the state can do it is not the point. The point is, it is the wrong policy. If we continue to reward people for entering our country illegally, why should they stop. Also, once these people have a college education, they can not legally hold a job as they are still illegally in this country. This point seems to never be considered.

Perry also was forced to defend his position on requiring (with opt-out) young girls to have an HPV vaccination. Romney attacked him for using an executive order to implement this rather than going through the legislative process. Perry admitted he should have done it differently but defended having the requirement. Bachman and Santorum then attacked Perry on the issue of the government requiring anyone to have a vaccination for something that doesn't affect others. Perry's actions seem to indicate that he feels that government knows better than we do. I do not agree with this premise.

Ron Paul gained some ground with his libertarian views on domestic issues but lost all of that and more on the issue of international security. His isolationism and allowing Iran, and anyone else, to obtain nuclear weapons is simply inviting another attack on US soil. This is especially disconcerting on the day after 9/11.

Newt Gingrich was his usual glib self and very entertaining. However, he did not really advance his cause in any way.

Herman Cain stuck with his 9-9-9 plan but didn't really do much else.

Rick Santorum had good answers and comments but his delivery was questionable. He came across as either passionate, frustrated, or panicked depending on your view. I was just not comfortable for some reason with this.

I have wondered previously why John Huntsman was in attendance. I am still wondering.

Republican Presidential Debate - Mediocre

The Republican Presidential Debate that was held last night at the Reagan Library was mediocre at best. There were no new ideas or programs presented, and the format of the questions was terrible.

Rather than asking the Candidates their view on an issue or asking them to explain their positions or statements the moderators asked them to comment on someone else's positions or statements. This was obviously done in an attempt to cause the Candidates to attack each other. Unfortunately, several of the Candidates rose to the bait. Suprisingly, the two biggest culprits were the front-runners, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. I would have expected them to stay above the fray and provide points differentiating themselves from President Obama. I was waiting for a response like: "If you want _______(insert Candidate's name here) opinion, you should ask him/her. My position on this matter is .....". But instead they sniped at each other.

Also, eight people is an extremely large number to attempt to have a debate in which everyone has a chance to have significant time to express their views. While I don't have the exact times for each Candidate, it certainly appeared that Rick Perry and Mitt Romney had the largest portion of time. They were followed by Michelle Bachman then Rick Santorum. Ron Paul, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, and John Huntsman were present but did not seem to really get much of a chance.

One of the topics was RomneyCare. There were questions asked about this but I don't recall any questions about ObamaCare. This was an interesting situation. (Does this say something about the positions of the Moderators?) It was the perfect opportunity for Romney to declare that it "seemed like a good idea at the time" but wished he hadn't done it. Unfortunately, he maintained his support of the program.

Rick Perry also whiffed when he was confronted with the fact Massachusetts has a very high insurance coverage rate whereas Texas has much less. Mr. Perry did not simply point out the cost of the Massachusetts coverage and that it was pushing the State into bankruptcy.

With little of new substance on issues the only separating feature I saw was the way the Candidates comported themselves. That is, did they look and act Presidential. I found the Perry/Romney bickering to be annoying and not very Presidential. The calmest, and most Presidential in this debate was Michelle Bachman. She came off well, spoke calmly, and left the slogans at home.

Hopefully the next debate on September 12 in Tampa will be more enlightening. This debate is sponsored by CNN and the Tea Party Express which is a very interesting combination.

10 Cannots and You

1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
3. You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
4. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
5. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
6. You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
7. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
8. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
9. You cannot build character and courage by destroying men's initiative
independence.
10. And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can
and should do for themselves.

I wish I could take credit for writing these but I can’t. They were written in 1916 by William J. H. Boetcker. He was born in Germany and immigrated to the U.S. as a young adult. Ronald Reagan was impressed enough with these thoughts that he quoted them in his 1992 speech at the Republican Convention in Houston.

It appears to me that the current policies of our Government (at all levels) violate every one of these “Cannots”. As we are getting into the campaign and election season, all of us in Grays Harbor County need to apply these “Cannots” to the candidates we are supporting and voting for. This should be done at every level of government from City Council to President of the United States.

I would encourage everyone who believes in these “Cannots” to fully support those candidates that share this belief. While “fully support” certainly means voting for these candidates; there is much more to “fully support” than that. “Fully Support” includes volunteering your time and, if possible, your money. Candidates need help in a myriad of tasks both public and non-public and are flexible with the amount of time you can spare. I am sure any candidate would be grateful for two hours per week. With the electronic age upon us, many of these tasks can be done from home. We also know that it costs money to get elected.

If will all do a few things, no one will have to do everything. If we are going to change the current course of our government, it will take the effort of all of us. Please contact a candidate of your choice and volunteer. You will not only have an opportunity to redirect our Country to the proper path but also meet some great people.

County Commissioners Lazy or Inept?

The County Commissioners are continuing their "across the board" budget cuts for the current year and, apparently, are considering the same approach for next year's budget. Why? Do they not recognize that certain services are a higher priority than others?

When a family encounters hard times, they don't cut their latte budget the same percentage as the kids' school lunch budget. They prioritize. Shouldn't our County Commissioners do the same thing? This is the type of leadership and tough decision-making that we should not only expect but demand from our elected officials.

Many believe the number one priority for government should be the safety of its citizens. To underfund the Sheriff's Office, Court system, and Corrections just so that "across the board" cuts can be made is at best lazy, and at worst is inept. There, undoubtedly, will be differing opinions on what the priorities should be and these should be discussed and resolved in a public meeting. Perhaps this means that some entire programs will be cut or some departments eliminated or significantly reduced while others suffer no cuts whatsoever. This may be unfortunate but it is the hard economic reality in which we are currently living.

The Commissioners are choosing to pass the buck to the various departments and agencies saying "You make the cuts." By doing this, they are providing political cover for themselves because they can always point to others who had to actually make the cuts and say it was someone else who cut that position or reduced that program. We should not allow them to do this.

We should demand that those serving at the County Commissioner level show leadership and make the difficult decisions. Then we must hold them accountable for those decisions. If they are unable or unwilling to do so, there is always the next election.

Conservatism Scorecard

Heritage Action (http://heritageactionscorecard.com/scorecard/index.html#D000327) did a scorecard on conservatism among members of Congress. Heritage Action explains the scorecard thus:

"With each vote cast in Congress, freedom either advances or recedes. Heritage Action’s new legislative scorecard allows Americans to see whether their Members of Congress are fighting for freedom, opportunity, prosperity, and civil society. The scorecard is comprehensive, covering the full spectrum of conservatism, and includes legislative action on issues both large and small.

Heritage Action’s legislative scorecard isn’t graded on a curve – it is tough and we don’t apologize. After all, we are conservatives, not tenured university professors."

The scorecard grades five (5) bills for Sponsorship and votes on thirty (30) bills.

For a point of reference, Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina was the highest rated at 99%.

Washington’s delegation did not rate quite as well. The highest scorer was Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers with a score of 62%. Sen. Maria Cantwell was the worst with 0% followed closely by Rep. Norm Dicks' 3%. Sen. Patty Murray was only slightly better with a 5% rating and gubernatorial candidate Rep. Jay Inslee received a 10% rating.

In Grays Harbor County, we have the opportunity to “unelect” two of these (assuming Inslee runs for Governor). We must do everything we can to cause this to happen. Failure to do so will only continue to deprive us of our freedom, rights, and, of course, our money.

Young Is On the Record

While County Commissioners Terry Willis and Mike Wilson continue to fence-sit on the Wild Olympics Campaign and Congressman Norm Dicks is invisible, Jesse Young is on the record. Young, who's looking to defeat Norm Dicks in 2012, says:

"Genuine concern for all is needed when making decisions concerning our environment. Will adding 37,000 acres to the Olympic National Park and designating the streams as “Wild and Scenic” and the forests as “Wilderness” really help the residents of the District and our environment? The balanced answer is decidedly "No", and I am against the Wild Olympics proposal."

MacEwen Seeks Seat in 35th L.D.

Drew MacEwen recently announced his candidacy for the State House Rep., Pos. 2. in the 35th Legislature District. The 35th L.D. includes all of Mason and portions of Grays Harbor, Kitsap and Thurston Counties. A Navy veteran, MacEwen is also founder and president of the investment firm Falcon Financial Inc. (in Union, WA) and Vice President of the Shelton Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the Board of Shelton Rotary.

MacEwen said, "I am passionate about bringing conservative values to our legislature and promoting business and job growth."

County Commissioners Pass on Wild Olympics

I could not believe the article about our County Commissioners chastising Congressman Norm Dicks for not taking a stand on the Wild Olympics plan when they themselves refuse to take a position. If the issue is “tearing this community apart” as Commissioner Terry Wills was quoted as saying, why not take a position? The qualities needed for a County Commissioner should include decisiveness and leadership. Shouldn’t we expect/demand that they exhibit these qualities by making a decision on such a significant issue? Waiting for someone else to step up is certainly not leadership.

Why wait for Congressman Dicks to decide? Are they his rubber stamp or are they willing and able to do the research needed in order to reach a conclusion that, they believe is the best result for the citizens of Grays Harbor County. Are they also going to wait for the Congressman to solve their budget problems?

This does not even address why Congressman Dicks has not stated a position. Jesse Young, candidate for Congress for the 6th District, clearly stated his opposition to Wild Olympics in a hand out at the Ocean Shores Flag Day Parade and at the Grays Harbor County Fair. Grays Harbor Republicans Support Working Wild Olympics, Private Property Rights

The Grays Harbor Republican Party has done what county commissioners Willis and Wilson and Congressman Norm Dicks (D-WAffle) seemingly can't or won't do: take a stand on the Wild Olympics Campaign. The party endorsed the efforts of Working Wild Olympics (Our Olympics Are Wild Enough), a coalition of private property proponents, timber interests and outdoor enthusiasts, by unanimous vote at its Central Committee Meeting on April 5.

Republicans support limited government and the right of the people to own property free from excessive, intrusive government regulation and confiscation. Wild Olympics is a sterling example of both.

Wild Olympics' 'conservation' talk is a rhetorical ruse that obfuscates the real issue: an assault on private property. Opponents understand this, particularly those who are likely to be most directly impacted. While pro-Wild Olympics signs are planted in quite a few lawns in town, for example, how many have you seen in Neilton or Quinault? They're conspicuous by their absence. Instead, "Stop the $900M land grab" signs are popping up like overnight mushrooms.

Grays Harbor Republicans have stepped up to the plate on this issue, while two-thirds of the county commissioners have spent enough time sitting on the fence to qualify it as an Olympic sport. Meanwhile, Rep. Dicks hasn't even made it out of the dugout. Way to waffle, Norm!

Grays Harbor Republican Party Endorses Dan Griffey for State House

The Grays Harbor Republican Party unanimously endorsed Dan Griffey for the State House of Representatives at its Central Committee Meeting on July 5. A professional firefighter, Griffey is running for State House Position 1 in the 35th District.

Griffey has lived in the district his entire life and decided to run for office in 2012 because "The present course of action is not getting us anywhere." He added, "I have never been one to sit on the sidelines while there is work to be done. We can create jobs, lower taxes, educate our kids and get our state back on track. Together we CAN do better!"

"As chairman of the 35th, I was very glad to see the Grays Harbor Central Committee endorse Dan Griffey's candidacy for the State House," said Pat Tarzwell. "Dan has demonstrated his ability and willingness to do the hard work required to win and will well serve the people he will represent."

"Dan is a dedicated public servant with a long track record of community involvement," said Grays Harbor Republican Party Chair Kristine Lowder.
